Helping people in West Berkshire rebuild confidence and communication
Support For Our Volunteers
We do not expect you to be an expert! We provide some training and there are lots of resources available for you to find out more.
Our speech therapist also gives us detailed training on aphasia and there are usually opportunities to observe her working with members.
There is some compulsory training provided via the Stroke Association. This is usually carried out online so can be done at a time to suit you. It covers the Stroke Association, data protection and safeguarding. You also have to complete a criminal record check (DBS) that’s approved by the Stroke Association.
Volunteers for Newbury Speakability sessions need to have good communication skills and most importantly be a good listener. You will need to be flexible as you will have to adapt your communication style in different ways when communicating with people who have aphasia. You must be patient and able to help people build their confidence.
