Helping people in West Berkshire rebuild confidence and communication

Volunteer With Us

Group of adult male and female Speakability volunteers offering aphasia support across Newbury and West Berkshire

The Newbury Speakability Group relies entirely on volunteers. Our volunteers have a huge impact on the people we support.

On Monday Mornings

Aphasia can make any social interaction difficult. Imagine not being able to have a conversation or make yourself understood. Imagine not being able to read or write or even send a message or chat with friends. You might feel frustrated, lonely, confused and lose your confidence.

Having regular contact with others who share their experience of aphasia or who understand aphasia is really important to help with those emotions.

By volunteering with us, you can really help and make a difference.

At Other Times

Most of our volunteers are available on Monday mornings (10.30am to noon) and come regularly to our weekly meetings.

Volunteering here is about helping with practicalities to make the meetings run smoothly, helping with activities and supporting members with their communication skills.

This might mean, for example, you take the lead playing a game or facilitate a discussion or you might simply make a cup of tea or coffee for someone and sit with them and enjoy a friendly chat.

Sometimes we need a bit of help to set out tables and chairs and to tidy up at the end of the session.

Volunteering for us is flexible, we understand our volunteers have other commitments too. We also need Volunteers who can meet up with a member at a time to suit them. This might be to practise a specific language skill, help someone with a hobby, go out for a coffee or sit with someone to provide a break for their carer.

Volunteers with specific skills like applying for grants, marketing and finance are always welcome.
